Hillcombe Hanging revisited

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

In 2017 I had a painting of a derelict barn near Stourton exhibited in the Royal West Academy annual show.

I have always been drawn to human elements in the landscape and their fragility in particular, hence my penchant for dereliction. It is fascinating to chronicle the slow demise of something as apparently substantial as a barn, as it returns slowly to its natural elements.

And so, three years on, I decided to make another painting of the same barn, which I have just completed. Three winters of storms have certainly taken their toll and it is definitely more precarious than it was. Perhaps there will be time for another painting in a few years time, but perhaps it will be long gone by then. Or perhaps I will be!
